Contemporary RURAL Garden, BLAckwater ESTUARY
This substantial rural garden had lost its way over time, as the owners’ children had grown up and the once needed swimming pool and games lawn were no longer in regular use. The property is blessed with a garden that wraps all the way round the house, offering a number of different design opportunities that the client was keen to explore along with increasing the biodiversity across the site and finding some spaces in which to relax out of the wind.
Main Garden
The rear of the house enjoys uninterrupted views across the open countryside and as such leant itself beautifully to a contemporary naturalistic planting style, using a wide range of perennials and grasses that change colour with the seasons and the landscape beyond. Sited along the existing terrace is a new low level contemporary water feature that houses the clients fish and collection of water lilies and whose surface beautifully reflects the big open skies.
Arrival Garden
To the front of the house what had once been an in and out driveway was reconfigured to provide a space for a cottage garden with wildlife pond and a more formal arrival garden. Smaller in scale and tucked between road and house is the Cottage Garden with three natural pools of water that flow into each and through which there are stepping stones allowing access across the pond. An organic shaped timber deck overhangs the upper pond and makes an ideal gin terrace from which to watch the birdlife dipping in and out of the water.
