MODERN TOWN GARDEN, MANNINGTREE
This commission required a careful blend of bold contemporary design reflecting the interior styling, together with a sense of classical elegance to complement the architecture of this small town garden. However, it was a key practical issue that drove the functionality of the design. With multiple entrances onto the garden there was no clear priority access, so a design featuring a central lawn surrounded by Breedon gravel pathways enabled us to connect the spaces and create a sense of journey within a small space.
A new terrace provides space for entertaining, plus an intimate circular seating area offers a space where the clients can relax whilst looking back at their children playing on the lawn. A series of architectural blue poles, painted in the client’s favourite colour, follow the curve of the wall to provide strong structure and movement. They add a quirky element to a design that really comes in to its own in the winter months. The symmetry and formality of the lawn and pathways needed to be offset by a more relaxed and exuberant planting style. Amelanchier trees were chosen to provide screening and offer a long season of interest, with blossom in spring and berries and red flushed leaves for autumn.
In the borders spring brings the chartreuse green of Euphorbia characias and white Narcissus and Tulips followed by the summer blues of Nepeta and Geranium ‘Roxanne’, purple Lavender and white Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’. Autumn brings the tall luscious leaves of Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’ together with a pop of the striking vibrant pink of Salvia ‘Bethellii’. This luxuriant abundance of foliage and flower creates a sense of enclosure, immersion and privacy.
