English Country ESTATE, dedham vale
The construction of a beautiful new family home together with the planting of a new vineyard on a 7 acre site of a former market garden prompted the need for an entirely new garden. We were commissioned to design a masterplan that incorporated an arrival garden, kitchen garden, courtyard garden and swimming pool garden. The clients were keen for an English Country garden in which they could relax and entertain family and friends and one that was more attractive to wildlife and due to the scale of the project each aspect has its own identity within the overall theme.
Arrival Garden
Organised, formal and tidy with evergreen planting together with seasonal flowering plants, the arrival garden provides a splendid welcome with ample parking and clear pathways to other parts of the garden.
Courtyard Garden
This charming private courtyard with views out to the vineyard has a bowl water feature, with its gently flowing water most attractive to birds on warm sunny days. Pathways and terraces were created using the durable Buscot limestone with its soft feel and warm buff tones surrounded by multiple planting beds designed using colourful loose perennials planted around a number of the ever versatile Amalanchier trees which provide much needed shelter from hot sunshine and drying winds in the summer months. Strategic planting of taller flowering perennials and grasses of Veronicastrum, Molinia and Stipa were used to create a planting veil between entertaining terraces, creating smaller intimate spaces.
Kitchen Garden
The route between the garage and the back door is well trodden one in any garden and here the client was keen to have something attractive to look at all year round. More formal in design with 4 identical beds around a stone sculpture the planting is more traditional in style with Crab apple trees under planted with roses, Benton Iris, soft perennials and herbs.
Swimming Pool Garden
Designed by the same architect as the house, the pool house with views back to the house is the focal point at the end of the pool with long flower borders either side of the pool. There was not a single tree on site at the start of the project so it was crucial to add height and screening in the borders for privacy. White flowering Prunus Accolade is repeated along both sides of the pool, creating an abundance of flower in late spring beneath which is planted the delightful pale pink Queen of Sweden rose, with soft textural Miscanthus, Lavender, Artemisia and much more repeated in groups around the garden to create one cohesive design.
